Interview with Alan Sealls, Reddit’s “Best Weatherman Ever”

Alan Sealls explaining radar from Hurricane Irma in 2017

Alan Sealls has been forecasting the weather for over three decades. Although he retired from local TV in January 2024, he’s not walking off into the sunset filled with altocumulus clouds just yet.

In an interview with Tim Heller, Alan discusses his career, the changes he’s witnessed over the years, and his predictions for the future.

Alan Sealls is very familiar to viewers in Mobile, Alabama, where he served his community as chief meteorologist for 24 years, first at WKRG and more recently at WMPI NBC15.

His meteorological expertise is backed by bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cornell University and Florida State University. Alan earned certifications from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Notably, he has the distinction of being a Fellow of the AMS, a title earned by only a select few in the meteorological community.

Alan’s television career began in Albany, Georgia, at WALB, and continued with positions at WTMJ in Milwaukee, followed by jobs at WMAQ and WGN in Chicago. During his time in the Windy City, he also served as a meteorology professor at Columbia College in Chicago.

Alan’s commitment to education extends to his role as an adjunct professor at the University of South Alabama, where he currently teaches weather broadcasting each spring. He’s also a frequent guest in local schools where he enthusiastically shares his passion for meteorological marvels.

Although he’s earned an impressive 27 regional Emmy nominations and 16 wins, Alan is best known outside of Alabama for his coverage of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Reddit users named him the “Best Weatherman Ever” after a hurricane update went viral on YouTube.

Although he won’t be forecasting the weather on TV, Alan still delivers weather wisdom on social media. He’s also very active in his local community and broader weather community, writing newspaper articles, producing weather educational videos, conducting safety seminars for local businesses, and serving as an invited speaker for weather and journalism conferences.

Alan is also a published author. In addition to being featured in a children’s book, Alan has written about his Career in TV Meteorology, Weather Things You Always Wanted to Know, and Weather Things in Photos.
